SLinCA Partners with University of Wits on Climate Change Adaptation and
Mitigation Evidence Platform
In February 2022, the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) and the
Future Ecosystems for Africa (FEFA and partners; Oppenheimer Research and Conservation,
University of the Witwatersrand, AUDANEPAD) invited SLinCA to develop a working
paper report with the goal of deepening understanding of the relationship between land and
climate change adaptation in Africa. The report, titled “Enhancing climate change adaptation
and mitigation actions on land in Africa” was published in October 2022 and served as an
important document for the preparation of the position document submitted by the Republic
of Zambia (on behalf of the Africa Group) on how to enhance climate actions on land under
the existing UNFCCC programmes and activities.
In preparing the report, the SLinCA team conducted extensive literature review to 1) define a
preliminary framework for assessing climate actions in Africa, and 2) collate and evaluate
evidence for all major land-based climate change adaptation and mitigation actions. Both the
preliminary framework and evidence database are crucial for informing, managing, and
evaluating climate actions on land in Africa. However, they require further expansion and
updating, including the integration of recent datasets and technologies (e.g., AI) and
standardization to enhance and facilitate their utility in climate change policy and project
interventions in Africa.
On May 20, 2024, SLinCA officially signed a collaborative agreement with the University of
Witwatersrand, South Africa to expand, update and standardize the evidence database and
framework for assessing climate actions on land in Africa. Specifically, the project will seek
to achieve the following:
Expand, update, and standardize the FEFA evidence database
The project aims to bridge the gap between science, policy, and practice by providing
accessible, context-specific data and knowledge to guide climate action. Through this
partnership, both institutions will co-develop a dynamic digital platform designed to
consolidate evidence from research, community-based initiatives, and institutional
programmes addressing climate resilience across Africa.
Update the framework for evaluating nature-based solutions in Africa
