What We Do

Knowledge Creation

We create Knowledge that improves synergies between livelihood and nature conservation through:

  • Research synthesis – we review both published and grey literature and synthesize them into readily available and easy-to-use format (e.g., policy brief, research highlight, etc.) for communities, businesses and regulators.
  •      Actionable research – We conduct both participatory and practical action research to co-define problems and co-design solutions for transformative change.
  • Basic research – we undertake fundamental research to improve our understanding of how current resource use and production systems (e.g., timber harvesting, artisanal mining, cocoa production, etc.) impact the environment (e.g., biodiversity) and how climate change will affect these dynamics.

Capacity building

We support capacity building that enhances the application of new and innovative solutions to improve synergies between livelihood and nature conservation. We target three main stakeholder groups:

  • Local communities – We build the capacity of local communities to improve existing and develop new green value chains, 2) build their capacity to produce and trade in sustainable product, 3) sustainably manage natural resources in their communities, and 4) restore degraded ecosystems.
  • Private sector – We assist private sector partners to meet their environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments. We offer guidance, training, and capacity building in environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), risk management, health and safety, sustainability, and certification schemes.
  • Career development – We train and prepare emerging young leaders to take on major roles in the field of sustainability, climate change adaptation and mitigation and scientific research.

Networking

Enhancing synergies between livelihood activities and nature conservation requires sustained efforts involving multiple actors, often with diverse perspectives, interests and operational targets. SLinCA works to connect such diverse stakeholder groups and redirect efforts to supporting sustainable livelihood and nature conservation. We do this by:

  • Organizing and training producer groups to produce certified commodities
  • Linking producers with major market operators and funders
  • Creating public and private partnerships that supports green value chains and nature conservation
